The Future of Online High Schools
Just a few years ago, the thought of getting a high school diploma online was a foreign one to most people. Even with the advent of online colleges and universities, there wasn't much presence in the educational world of online diploma programs for students who needed a more individual experience or for adults who needed to attain their high-school equivalency in a more convenient way. However, that's all starting to change.
The University of Miami's online high school program recently celebrated its one-year anniversary, doubling its attendance, and it's now also regionally accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Council on Accreditation and School Improvement. The school's growth is a reflection of the larger trend in distance learning, which is experiencing steady growth for a variety of reasons.
Chief among those factors is the increased access to the Internet and the growing ease of use among Web-based services. More people have home computers than ever, and Internet penetration is at an all-time high with almost half of Americans having quick access to the Web. The culture is at a tipping point where enough people are able to view online diploma programs as a feasible option instead of just some high-concept dream. And as more and more citizens gain home access to the Internet, online high schools will become more and more popular. There will be more schooling options for students, both in terms of online-only programs and those established via the distance-learning wings of physical institutions.
There's also a larger cultural shift that will aid in the spread and acceptance of online high schools; namely, as the technology increases to make them more viable, people will become comfortable enough with Web culture to perceive them as real options and respect those who attended one. This isn't just a matter of accreditation. This is about making sure that online diploma programs are treated with the same deference as more traditional high schools, and that's something that will happen over time as more people become familiar working with Web-based services.
The future of online high schools is ultimately a bright one, full of possibility, that will only get better as the technology gets better at meeting the needs of nontraditional students from all walks of life.
